Porting across platforms

Porting? What??

As a designer I had never heard the term "porting" before and read this article by http://www.rightrelevance.com

nounAutomotive, Machinery.

1. the changing of the size, shape, or location of the intake and exhaust ports in an internal-combustion engine, generally to improve performance.

So... the question of the day is in response to this article - what changes are you guys making across the platforms that would upset a user? As a branding manager, the look and feel is a given. However, navigation must change from desktop to tablet to mobile. I was wondering if porting your designs effects good UX, then what is considered major changes that do this?

Is it icon use? or are some designers reinvisioning everything from scratch each page? it only stands as a UI designer to work on a 12 grid system that would inline your designs based on screen and retina display. Same elements chosen in a hierarchy of information. Sometimes, yes its very important to eliminate extra navigation (like sub sub navs) to prevent overload on a sandwhich menu.... but I need feedback on to how reporting porting works to interfere with the design? Got an idea? Hit me up at heather(at)siteimages.com.

Installation History Exhibit

In the Fall of 2013, I began working for Heurista - a design firm who specializes in large scale installation and design. Heurista started working with the Tuomey Medical Center to research and design a history exhibit to launch their centennial celebration. The project was based around a series of historical characters and the custom branding for the centennial year. The history exhibit was launched in conjunction with a new look for the hospital's website.  The logo and color palette will play out over billboards, print ads, banners and themed apparel designed throughout the centennial year.

Heurista focused on elaborating the centennial themes–service, pride and healing.  We used created a design customized for the available space. The exhibit used a collage of historic photos on the walls.  Stories were conveyed by individual life-sized cutout figures of people with past and current ties to the hospital. Overhead banners introduced the centennial logo and colors.

The exhibit was designed with functionality, durability and cost-effectiveness in mind.  While the graphics will be on display for a full year, the exhibit is ultimately temporary. Installation was coordinated with the client facilities staff, who will remove the exhibit at the end of the year.  Digital printing and brightly colored paint bring visual impact but can be easily removed or repainted.

The exhibit was unveiled on February 11th, 2014, the centennial anniversary of the Tuomey Hospital. Media coverage and a "birthday party" kicked off a year-long celebration. Employees and visitors alike were excited to see photos–often of themselves–and learn more about the role of the hospital in their community.

"We had a vision for our 100th anniversary display, and the team from Heurista brought it to life. And it was even better than we had hoped for. The people were fantastic to work with from beginning to end, and they made this project so much fun!"

Philantropy Center Designs

Working for Heurista Co SiteImages designed 3 large scale donor recognition panels. There was also 5 matching plaques to accompany the touch screen designs in the middle. The hands I created became the Center's logo for this campaign, and where incorporated into the digital designs.

From Heurista "Recognition is the variety of activities designed to thank the donor, both publicly and privately. Ranging from a thank you note to a plaque on the wall to a recognition event, these strategies are typically based on the type of gift and the gift amount. Many organizations could use more focus on standardization to make practices efficient and effective. Consistency, coordination with the brand and cost effective implementation and maintenance must be carefully balanced with a sense of creativity and spontaneity."

Graphic Design Services

Sometimes I work with small businesses, sole proprietors who need once in a while web design and graphic design assistance in the Asheville area.

I start with a free one hour consultation and then I write up a proposal to go over all your needs. Projects include mobile friendly websites, marketing materials, logos, or a mobile friendly newsletter. This might also include a Branding Package, if you are just starting out and need guidance for an over all look and feel for your new company. You might only need just an updated business card, or a event flyer. I outline each project you describe a need for, and estimate the time for each project - giving you a good idea of the costs up front. I can also work with you to stay within a monthly budget. Get things done over time.... build your brand and business as it grows.

Branding Packages include a logo, pantone colors, social media icons, fonts and a general discovery period to define your brand. Brands usually also include developing a tagline, and an overall feeling that is reproduced graphically. I've used my friend and Asheville area Massage Therapist Laura Lochbaum, as a great example of working with a local client on a small business that is growing! By the way, Laura is an incredible Massage Therapist, I HIGHLY recommend her!

Many logos are simply text (a font or two) and are always created in Adobe Illustrator to be in vector format so it can be resized large or small. Sometimes you want an icon and text... Sometimes you need a lot more! Most clients need a social media presence, a website and a mobile friendly newsletter as well. I design the logo, then create a social media icon, and facebook cover image and profile square icon to match the look and feel of the company. This then turns into the web browser's "favorite icon" which displays up next to the url in the browser. Then of course your business card, and other marketing materials. The client usually gives feedback, resulting in small changes until they are so excited that what they imagined is now before them!

Laura Lochbaum's facebook cover image matches her new website and business cards.

Once the logo defines the branding, usually a squarespace website is next. We pow-wow over the elements, the navigation, the graphics.... and within a short period of time, the client is logging into their squarespace site, and discovering how easy it is to edit the site themselves!

We add a blog, newsletter sign up box and social media accounts. I can also help design your newsletter and set up your Mailchimp account for a special price. It's all very straight forward and I love the developing relationships I get from clients that turn into new friends!

Find yourself loving your new website, business card and logo. Be able to post a blog from your phone. Learn how easy it is to review your website's traffic and built-in analytics. Get that brochure you always wanted. Find out how and why people rank in google, and learn those tactics for your new site too.

Graphic design is a fundamental marketing element to your small business. I work with Asheville business owners to create a very affordable business presence, and combine design with marketing skills to give you only the best in layout and web design. I have over 15 years full time professional experience to deliver quality results on time and within budget. I work quickly, and I work with you to achieve your dreams. Contact me today to get started on any size graphic or web design project that you might have a need for - no job to small or too big!
